Industry plays a vital role in development of a country. The Industrial Sector is the main vehicle for accelerating economic activity besides providing employment to the unemployed youth. The state of Jammu and Kashmir started the process of planned Industrialization in 1970 with establishment of Directorate of Industries and Commerce.

The Directorate of Industries & Commerce, J&K was bifurcated vide Govt. Order No: 149-Ind of 2007 dated: 03.08.2007, where under two separate Directorates were created for Jammu and Kashmir Divisions to ensure the speedy development of industries.

The Directorate is headed by Director who is assisted by Joint Director (Development) & Joint Director (M&P), Chief Accounts Officer, Deputy Director (P&S), Assistant Director & Administrative Officer .

The Directorate of Industries & commerce, Jammu functions through 10 District Industries Centers (DICs) one in each district of Jammu division. Each DIC is headed by a General Manager who is assisted by Project Managers, Functional Managers, other field officials and Ministerial staff.

OBJECTIVES:

  • To strive towards balanced economic and social development in all the regions of the state by promoting Industrialization particularly of the industrially backward areas.
  • To encourage and sustain the Cottage and Micro Industrial sector.
  • To create a supportive environment with transparency and easy access in information technology and financial resources.
  • To revive potentially viable sick Industrial units so as to make the optimum use of the capital and other resources already employed in such enterprises.
  • To promote the growth of thrust and export-oriented Industries and encourage high-tech and knowledge based Industries including Information Technology.
  • To take necessary steps in the field of Human Resource Development  so as to make the available skilled/technical manpower as per the need of the Industries

MAJOR FUNCTIONS OF DIRECTORATE OF I & C, JAMMU

  • Registration of New Units.
  • Nodal Agency for implementation of Central & State Package of Incentives.
  • Identification, Planning & Development of Industrial Estates.
  • Coordinating with Jammu & Kashmir Development Finance Corporation (JKDFC) for    disbursement of incentives under Central Package.
  • Implementation of Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP).
  • Coordinating various Industrial activities with MSME (GOI), SICOP & SIDCO.
  • Registration of Societies under J&K Registration of Societies Act, Registration of Firms under J&K Partnership Act and Registration of Industrial Consultancies.
  • Implementation of Annual Plans of the State Govt. through SIDCO/SICOP
